How to Read a Plant Label (and Why Most of Them Tell You Almost Nothing)
Every label says the same four things. None of them tell you how often to water it.
You buy a plant. The label says "Green Plant, 12cm. Bright indirect light. Water when soil feels dry. Easy care."
Three of those four statements are true of almost every houseplant sold, and the fourth is a marketing claim. The label has told you nothing you can act on.
What the standard phrases actually mean
"Bright indirect light." Printed on labels for plants ranging from snake plants, which survive a dim hallway, to fiddle leaf figs, which need a position next to a big window. It covers roughly 80 percent of houseplants and does not distinguish between them.
"Water when the soil feels dry." Dry where? The surface always dries first and tells you nothing. Dry two inches down is the useful measure, and for a succulent you want the whole pot dry, and for a calathea you want it never quite dry. Same sentence, three opposite instructions.
"Easy care." Means the plant survived the journey from the nursery. It is not a statement about your flat.
"Indoor plant" or "assorted tropical." Not a name. Genuinely no information.
A watering frequency, like "water weekly." Worse than nothing, because it is confidently wrong. The same plant needs water weekly in July and every three weeks in January, and that varies again with your light, your pot and your heating.
What is worth reading
A few things on labels are genuinely useful when they appear.
- A botanical name in italics, like Monstera deliciosa. This is the single most valuable thing a label can carry, because everything else can be looked up from it.Read this

The common name problem
Common names are unreliable in ways that matter.
They are ambiguous. "Dumb cane" covers several dieffenbachia species. "Chinese evergreen" covers dozens of aglaonema cultivars with different light needs.
They are actively misleading. Peace lily is not a lily and does not cause the kidney failure in cats that true lilies do. Sago palm is not a palm and is far more dangerous than any real palm. String of pearls is not related to pearls of anything.
They differ by country. The same plant is sold under different common names in the US, UK and Australia, so care advice found online may not be about your plant.
The botanical name is unambiguous everywhere. It is worth learning for the handful of plants you actually own.
What the label will never tell you
How much light your particular room gets. Whether your pot has drainage. How fast your soil dries. Whether the plant is toxic to your cat. What it looks like when it is unhappy, and which of the many possible causes applies.
Those are the things that determine whether it lives, and none of them are printable on a card because they depend on your home rather than on the plant.
What to do instead
Get the species. If the label has a botanical name, keep it. Take a photo of the label before it gets lost, which it will.
If there is no name, identify it. Photograph a leaf against a plain background with the stem junction visible, plus the whole plant. That gets you the species, and everything else follows from there.
Then work out your room, not the plant. Do the shadow test: hold a hand a foot above white paper at midday. Sharp shadow is bright light, soft-edged is medium, barely visible is low. Match the plant to the room rather than hoping.
Ignore printed watering frequencies entirely. Check the soil instead, every time, and expect the interval to change by a factor of three between summer and winter.
