Thrips: The Pest That Hides in the Soil and Comes Back
Silver streaks on the leaf and tiny black dots beside them. Half the population is in the soil, which is why leaf sprays fail.
Thrips are the pest people misdiagnose for longest, because the damage looks like a watering problem and the insects are almost too small to see.
They are slim, dark, about a millimetre long, and they scurry rather than fly when disturbed. Most people never see one. They see the damage.
The signature
Silvery or bronze streaks across the leaf surface, as if someone dragged a fine brush over it. Thrips rasp the surface open and drink what comes out, and the emptied cells scatter light differently, which is what produces the metallic look.
Tiny black specks scattered near the streaks. That is frass, their droppings, and it is the confirming sign. Silvering plus black dots is thrips and very little else.
Distorted, scarred new growth. They favour soft new tissue, so new leaves emerge crinkled, stunted or with corky brown scarring.
Compare that with spider mites, which produce fine pale dots rather than streaks, and with sun damage, which is patchy and confined to the exposed side.
Why they keep coming back
This is the part that matters, and it is why thrips have a reputation.
Most of the life cycle is not on the leaf. Larvae drop off the plant and pupate in the top layer of the potting mix. A leaf spray, however thorough, does not touch them. They mature, climb back up, and the infestation restarts about ten days after you thought you had won.
They also reproduce without mating, so a single survivor rebuilds a population, and eggs are laid inside the leaf tissue where nothing you can spray will reach.
What actually clears them
- Isolate the plant. Thrips fly a little and walk well, and they spread through a collection fast.Day 0
- Cut off badly damaged and distorted growth. It will not recover and it holds eggs.Day 0
- Rinse the whole plant thoroughly, undersides and growing tips included.Day 0
- Spray with insecticidal soap, neem or spinosad, covering every surface. Spinosad is notably effective against thrips specifically.Day 0
- Treat the soil too. This is the step people skip. Drench the top of the mix with the same product, or replace the top few centimetres of soil entirely.Day 0

Four cycles is the minimum. Three is where most people stop and it is why they think thrips are unkillable.
Repotting, and when it is worth it
For a badly infested plant, replacing the soil entirely shortcuts a lot of this. Tip it out, wash the old mix off the roots, bin that soil, and repot into fresh.
That removes the pupating population in one go. Combine it with cutting back damaged growth and spraying what remains, and you are treating one stage instead of two.
It is stressful for the plant, so weigh it. For a valuable plant with a heavy infestation it is usually the right call.
Which plants get them
Thrips will attack most things but show up most often on monstera, philodendron, alocasia, ficus and anything with large soft leaves. They also arrive on cut flowers, which is an overlooked route into a houseplant collection.
Outdoors they are extremely common on roses and on vegetables, so plants that summered outside are a frequent source.
Prevention
Quarantine new plants for two weeks and check new growth specifically, since that is where thrips concentrate.
Inspect when you water. Silvering is visible early if you look at the top surface of new leaves in good light, and week one thrips is a very different job from week six thrips.
Damage already done does not heal. Streaked and scarred leaves stay that way, so judge whether you have won by whether new growth emerges clean, not by whether the existing leaves improve.
