USDA Hardiness Zones Explained (and Why Yours Probably Changed)
About half the United States shifted half a zone warmer in 2023. If you are still gardening off the old map, some of your advice is out of date.
The short answer: your USDA hardiness zone tells you one thing only, which is the average coldest winter night where you live. It does not tell you about summer heat, humidity, rainfall, soil or how long your growing season is. In November 2023 the USDA published a new map, its first since 2012, and roughly half the country moved up half a zone.
If you learned your zone more than a couple of years ago, it is worth checking again. Plenty of people are now in a different zone without having moved house.
The 2023 map runs about 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the 2012 map across the contiguous United States.

Take the coldest night of the year, every year, for thirty years. Average those. That number puts you in a zone.
The map splits into thirteen zones ten degrees Fahrenheit apart, and each zone splits into an "a" and a "b" half five degrees apart. Zone 7a averages an annual low of 0 to 5°F. Zone 7b averages 5 to 10°F. Higher number means milder winter.
When a plant tag says "hardy to zone 5", it means the plant reliably survives winter in zone 5 and anywhere warmer. It does not mean it will be happy there. A plant rated zones 3 to 8 will survive the cold in zone 9 but may well die of summer heat, which the map says nothing about.
What changed in 2023, and why
The new map draws on data from 1991 to 2020, replacing the 1976 to 2005 window used for the 2012 edition. It also uses far more weather stations: 13,412 compared with 7,983 last time.
About half the country shifted to the next warmer half zone. The other half stayed put. The largest changes showed up through the central part of the country, the Central Plains and the Midwest, and the smallest in the Southwest.
Two things drove that. One is a genuinely warming climate. The other is better data and better interpolation, since more stations means finer resolution, especially in mountainous terrain where the old map smoothed over real local variation.
The USDA itself is careful on this point, and so should you be: a single map update is not by itself proof of climate change, because the underlying statistic is a thirty year average of extreme minimums and it is a noisy measure. The trend across successive maps is more informative than any one revision.
What the map does not tell you
This is where most gardening disappointment comes from. People buy on zone alone and are surprised when the plant sulks.
- Summer heat. Houston and coastal Oregon share zones with wildly different summers. The American Horticultural Society publishes a separate heat zone map for this.Not in the map
- Humidity. Many plants that shrug off cold rot in a humid southeastern summer.Not in the map
- Rainfall. Zone 8 in Seattle and zone 8 in Dallas are not the same place for a plant.Not in the map
- Growing season length. Two places in the same zone can differ by weeks in first and last frost.Not in the map
- Soil type and drainage. Wet feet in winter kills more marginal plants than cold does.Not in the map
- Microclimate. A south facing wall, a courtyard or a city centre can run a full zone warmer than the surrounding area.Not in the map
Microclimates are bigger than people think
Your garden is not one uniform place. Within a single small yard you can easily have a zone of variation.
South facing walls absorb sun all day and radiate it back at night, which is why people in zone 6 successfully grow figs against a brick wall. Urban areas run warmer than surrounding countryside, sometimes by several degrees. Low spots collect cold air that drains downhill overnight, so the bottom of a slope can be several degrees colder than the top and frost there first.
Containers are the exception in the other direction. Roots in a pot above ground have no soil insulating them, so a potted plant experiences winter roughly one to two zones colder than the same plant in the ground. If you overwinter pots outdoors, buy for two zones hardier than your own.
How to use your zone sensibly
Look yours up at the USDA site by zip code rather than eyeballing a map image, since resolution matters and the boundaries are not smooth.
Then treat it as a filter, not an instruction. Zone rules out plants that will freeze. Everything else about whether a plant will thrive comes from heat, water, soil and light.
Buy at or below your zone number for anything you expect to survive winter outdoors. If you are in zone 6, plants rated 3 to 9 are safe, and something rated 7 to 10 is a gamble you will probably lose in a cold year.
Gardening at the edge of your zone is genuinely fun, but expect losses. That is what "marginally hardy" means in practice, and mulch, a sheltered spot and a wall can buy you the half zone you need.
Zones outside the United States
Canada uses its own system from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, which factors in more than just minimum temperature, including snow cover, rainfall and wind. Canadian zone numbers look similar to USDA numbers but are not directly interchangeable, so check which system a nursery is quoting.
Australia and New Zealand mostly do not use USDA zones at all, since almost the entire populated area falls into what would be USDA zones 9 to 11 and the number stops discriminating. Local climate descriptions of temperate, subtropical and tropical are far more useful there, and the limiting factor is usually summer heat and drought rather than winter cold.
Knowing the plant matters more than knowing the zone
A zone is only useful once you know what you are actually holding. Plant tags go missing, nursery labels say "flowering shrub", and inherited gardens come with no documentation at all.
Photograph the leaf and the stem junction and Identium will name the species, along with the conditions it wants. Pair that with your zone from the USDA lookup and you have the two pieces of information that decide whether a plant lives.

Do Canada, Australia and New Zealand use USDA zones?
Canada has its own system from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada that accounts for snow cover, rainfall and wind as well as minimum temperature, so the numbers are not directly interchangeable with USDA ones. Australia and New Zealand largely do not use hardiness zones, because almost all populated areas fall in the same one or two zones and summer heat is the real constraint.
