Why Are My Plant's Leaves Curling? Read the Direction First
Up, down or twisted. The direction narrows it to two or three causes before you check anything else.
Curling is one of the more useful symptoms a plant produces, because the direction is diagnostic. Most people look at a curled leaf and see "unhappy". The leaf is being more specific than that.
Work through it in this order: which way, then where on the plant, then how the leaf feels.
Curling upward, edges lifting like a taco
Usually the plant trying to reduce the surface area exposed to light and heat.
Too much light or heat. Common on a plant recently moved into a bright window, or one sitting near a radiator. Often paired with pale or bleached patches.
Underwatering. Curling upward and inward is an early water conservation response, usually before any wilting. Check the soil two inches down.
Low humidity. Same mechanism. Very common in winter with central heating, and usually accompanied by crisp brown edges.
Curling downward, edges rolling under
Overwatering. The most common cause. Damaged roots cannot move water properly, and the leaves droop and roll under. Soil will be damp. Lower leaves go first and often yellow.
Too much fertiliser. Salt buildup makes water uptake harder, producing the same look. Check for white crust on the soil surface or pot rim.
Cold. A plant against a cold window or in a draught rolls its leaves down. Often alongside dark patches.
New leaves curled, twisted or distorted
This is the group worth taking seriously, because it usually means something is actively feeding on the plant.
Aphids or thrips. They feed on the newest, softest tissue, and the leaf grows misshapen around the damage. Look at the growing tip closely, and look for sticky residue.
Broad or cyclamen mites. Invisible without magnification. The tell is new growth that comes out narrow, cupped, hardened or bronzed while older leaves look fine.
Herbicide drift. Outdoors, distorted twisted new growth on tomatoes, grapes or beans often means weedkiller drifted in from somewhere. Characteristically cupped and strappy.
Calcium shortage. Calcium does not move around the plant, so a shortage shows only in new growth, which comes out deformed with hooked tips.
Curling with other symptoms
- Curling plus yellow lower leaves plus damp soil. Overwatering and probable root rot.Water

Plants that curl more than most
Calathea and maranta curl their leaves inward at night on purpose. It is called nyctinasty and it is completely normal. If the leaves are curled during the day and stay curled, that is different, and with these two it is nearly always water quality or low humidity. They dislike hard tap water and fluoride, so filtered or rain water helps.
Peace lily curls and droops dramatically when thirsty and recovers within hours. That is a feature, not a fault.
Fiddle leaf fig curls and puckers at the slightest change in position, draught or watering rhythm.
Pilea cups its leaves upward when it wants more light and flattens them out when it is content, which makes it one of the more readable houseplants.
What to actually do
Check the soil two inches down before anything else. That single check separates the two largest categories of cause.
Then look at the underside of two or three curled leaves in good light, and at the growing tip. If new growth is distorted while old growth is fine, treat it as a pest problem until proven otherwise.
Then change one thing and wait two weeks. Curled leaves generally do not uncurl, so judge the result by whether new growth comes out flat, not by whether the damaged leaves recover.

That is nyctinasty, a normal daily rhythm, and the leaves open again in the morning. Curling that persists through the day is a different problem, and with calathea and maranta it is usually hard tap water or low humidity. Filtered or rain water and higher humidity generally fix it.
Will curled leaves go back to normal?
Usually not. Once a leaf has curled the damage to that leaf is done, and it rarely flattens out again. Judge whether your fix worked by whether new leaves emerge flat and healthy, not by whether the affected ones recover.
